Too Faced? | Cruelty Free Makeup Options

In a market containing approximately a gazillion products, it can be difficult to navigate the tricky path of what is accessible, affordable, good value and high quality. Add in a layer of ethical responsibility, and the scene can be a nightmare.

2016 proved an interesting year for cruelty-free cosmetics, with cosmetic giant Estee Lauder acquiring previously independently owned, cruelty-free brands Becca and Too Faced.

As a parent company, Estee Lauder does sell products in mainland China, where animal testing is required by law for any cosmetic to be sold. Even if the products and ingredients themselves are not tested on animals, this fact means the brand cannot be considered cruelty free.

Too Faced issued a statement that they would always remain cruelty free, but this doesn’t change the fact that any money spent on the brand does in fact go towards the parent company.

What a person chooses to buy is entirely up to them, and though many cruelty free shoppers will continue to buy from Too Faced, there are others who will not purchase for a brand with a parent company that allows the use of animal testing.

Being a conscious consumer is important, so if you’re feeling like some brands are a little two faced, here is a run down of some of the best 100% cruelty free cosmetic brands, with a large majority – if not, all – of their products also being vegan.

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS

IMG_4776

Known primarily for their life-changing brow products, the pro brand has expanded naturally and effortlessly to provide an incredible array of high quality, beautiful cosmetics. The eyeshadow quality is impeccable, their highlighters are some of the best available, and their brow products are firm favourites for a damn good reason.

My favourite products:
– Glow Kits in Sweets and Moonchild;
– Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette;
– Dipbrow Pomade – I use the shade Ash Brown.

BY TERRY

IMG_4779

By no means the cheapest option when it comes to buying your cosmetics – they sell a cult $82AUD lip balm – but if quality is what you’re looking for, then By Terry is a solid bet. They’re an independent company, not owned by any parent company, and completely cruelty free, not selling in Mainland China.

My favourite products:
– Ombre Blackstar Eyeshadow Sticks in shades Misty Rock, Bronze Moon, Black Pearl and Frozen Quartz;
– Sun Designer Palettes – I love shade Tan and Flash Cruise 1.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY

IMG_4778

This shamelessly opulent makeup artists line is nothing if not gorgeous, but if you want a slice of old school glamour and quality to match the exceptionally beautiful exterior, then Charlotte Tilbury really can’t be beat.

My favourite products:
– Filmstar Bronze and Glow;
– Light Wonder Foundation;
– Eyeshadow Quads;
– Swish and Pop Blushes;
– Matte Revolution Lipsticks.

COVER FX

IMG_4773

This 100% vegan brand has carved itself a nifty niche in the makeup world, offering innovative and interesting products different to what many other brands put out, rather than regurgitating the same ol’ stuff over and over.

My favourite products:
– Custom Cover Drops;
– Custom Enhancer Drops, Moonlight, Celestial;
– Cream Contour Kit in G Light Medium.

HOURGLASS

IMG_4780

Famous for their luxe powder products, the independent company is 100% cruelty free, and largely vegan, spare a few products.

My favourite products:
– Ambient Lighting Powders in Luminous Light, Diffused Light and Ethereal Light;
– Ambient Lighting Blushes in any shade really, but my favourite is Incandescent Electra;
– Mineral Veil Primer;
– No 28 Serum Primer;
– Brushes – All vegan and cruelty free, and of the upmost quality.

KAT VON D

IMG_4772

Kat Von D has always been cruelty free, but midway through 2016, the brand reformulated many of it’s products to ensure they were in line with the namesakes vegan lifestyle. With some of the best eyeshadows on the market, and a liquid lipstick line to die for, her edgy aesthetic stands apart on the spectrum of makeup brands.

My favourite products:
– Shade and Light Eye Contour Palette;
– Pastel Goth Eyeshadow Palette;
– Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks, they’re all pretty fantastic, pick your favourite colours;
– Lock It Hydrating Primer.

KYLIE COSMETICS

IMG_4771

Say what you will about the always controversial Jenner/Kardashian clan, but there is no denying 19-year-old Kylie is a savvy business woman. Her cosmetic range is surrounded by more buzz than a beehive, but the quality of many of her products lives up to the hype, and then some. To top it off, the products come up reasonably affordable as far as mid-range Australian makeup pricing goes, just remember to save up and do one big order to get the free shipping.

My favourite products:
– Lip Kits in Posie K, Koko K, Love Bite, Kristen, and Koko Kollection;
– Burgundy Kyshadow Palette.

MARC JACOBS BEAUTY

IMG_4774

Though the fashion design house Marc Jacobs may use animal products to create their clothes, bags, and other fashion items, Marc Jacobs Beauty exists as an entirely separate entity – from their fragrances, too – and the cosmetics brand is entirely cruelty free. With some of the nicest powder products on the market, and some of the sleekest packaging.

My favourite products:
– Air Blushes, all the shades! They’re really great. But I do especially love Lines and Last NightFlesh and Fantasy, and Lush and Libido. Yes, the names are ridiculous;
– #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder in 10 Mirage Filter.

Look Good, Feel Better

I’ve cried at my reflection more times than I can count.

As a gal with a chronic illness, the horror of staring into my bulging eyes, grey skin and tired dark circles so purple and bruised that it looked like I’d been hit in the face, made me scared to shower for fear of catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror.

But with a bit of concealer, blush, lashings of mascara and some eyeliner, my corpse-like face stopped looking so close to death, and gave me the courage to walk out my bedroom door.

That’s one of the very many reasons I love makeup.

13672509_937363676389988_562370347_n.jpg
Retro CV, Hazel Grace style, circa 2011.

Though I rarely feel as bad as I did in the above photo, bad days still happen often.

When I feel like shutting all the doors, pulling the curtains and diving beneath a pile of blankets so heavy no one will ever find me, I take a moment to face my reflection, and be kind to it.

With brighter, more defined eyes, colour in my face, and bruises concealed, I feel human, and I am ready to be part of the world with the confidence illness all too often steals.

With this in mind, Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) is something I am immensely passionate about, and will forever sing the praises of.

LGFB is an Australian program, that offers a free service for cancer patients, to teach them how to manage the way their illness and treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy affect their appearances.

Women, men and teenagers are taught everything from proper skin care to makeup application, and head-wear demonstrations.

The program is by no means huge, and is managed by a small team of staff, and volunteer support from cosmetic specialists, makeup artists and hairdressers, giving their expertise to help these sick individuals regain some confidence.

Without government funding, the program relies on the support of corporate and community support, one partner being Priceline Pharmacy.

Though there are many ways to get involved with the wonderful program, a new makeup brush collection now available from Priceline is an exciting new way to support the cause.

13514282_917534958372860_710749881_n
Blush brush with Hourglass Incandescent Electra blush

The high-quality, synthetic, twelve brush collection is cruelty-free, allergy-free and suitable for sensitive skin.

15% from the sale of each brush will be donated directly to Look Good Feel Better, helping the estimated 10,000 people who will take part in the program this year.

I’ve purchased the blush brush, and the angle blending brush. Though bigger than my usual blush brush, is excellent for applying blush. Picking up just enough pigment and then buffing in perfectly. Works perfectly for bronzer, or just plain ol’ powder, too.

The angle blending brush is great for blending out eyeshadow edges, or even buffing in concealer.

If you feel like adding some brushes to your arsenal, I cannot recommend these more. Not just for the good cause, but the undeniable quality.

Not too long ago, someone online wrote a pointed comment towards me, claiming that my money spent on makeup could be better spent on mental health care.

The fury that pulsed through my veins as I read that was enough to drive a woman to break things.

Image is directly related to wellbeing and confidence. It is hard enough to suffer any kind of illness, whether that physical or mental, and lose the state of health so many people take for granted, without losing the appearance you’ve had your whole life.

13511591_917534978372858_1999586369_n.jpg

Chronic illness can changed the way people see themselves, whether they like it or not. That “I look like crap” feeling doesn’t leave.

Every now and then my usually invisible illness rears it’s ugly head and becomes visible to me. Suddenly I want to hide myself away, I feel embarrassed to walk in public. I remember people staring at my thinning hair, falling out in chunks, my bone thin frame, and my face so devoid of colour it was frightening.

So if something as small as buying a few makeup brushes can help women, men and teenagers living with cancer across Australia feel good about themselves, and wake up each day with confidence, then it feels like the least I can do.

Look Good Feel Better brushes are available online here, or in stores.

Best in beauty 2015: CHEEKS.

Screen Shot 2016-01-13 at 9.03.54 pm

My my, here we are at last. The end of the best in beauty 2015 makeup reviewing road.

And what better way to finish than with a look at some of the most fun and pretty products, blush, bronzer, and highlighter.

For lips it was the year of liquid lipsticks, but for the face, highlighting, or strobing, as the kids call it these days,was the new orange.

Here are my picks as the top cheek products of 2015.

12540030_825885117537845_908877177_n-1

Nars Luster Blush
Nars in general is my favourite blush formula. Long lasting, excellent colour range, and outstandingly pigmented so you only need the tiniest amount, and the plan itself lasts for ages. Luster, however, is my favourite shade by far, and although an old favourite, was far and away my most used blush of 2015. Its peachy-orange tone, and subtle gold shimmer makes it a perfect pair for pretty much any look, but especially a coppery eye, or orange lip.

Nars x Steven Klein One Shocking Moment Palette
First, the packaging. Adorned with the photography of Steven Klein, the outer bespoke case is striking and a gorgeous addition to a makeup display. But the contents are just as special. Containing a Laguna bronzer even bigger than a full sized single product, four blushes (including the aforementioned Luster), and contour and highlight duo in Paloma, the value alone makes this a favourite. I get use out of every shade in the palette, and it has earned itself a forever home in my makeup bag.

Although this specific, limited-edition palette itself has now sold out, take my advice and snap up other similar palettes when they are inevitably released throughout the year. The quality and value is unmatched, as far as I’m concerned.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Incandescent Electra
I couldn’t decide on which shade of Hourglass blush I wanted for months, and on the day I went into Mecca Maxima, convinced I would walk out with Diffused Heat, Incandescent Electra had been released. I left with it in tow. The prettiest, cool, neon coral, veined with incandescent highlighting powder, which adds a really subtle, lit-from-within glow to the cheeks.

Nars Dual Intensity Blush Fervor
The Dual Intensity blushes were a new addition to the Nars line in 2015. The unique formula can be used wet or dry, and each blush comes with two pans of complimentary colours. I’m keen to try a bronzer and highlight duo, but my standout favourite is Fervor, a deep, rusty rose and a pale pink. Works particularly well with the rust a wet, duo fibre blush, buffed into the back of the cheeks, and the paler shade lightly on the apples.

TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer
This highlighter is the old faithful workhorse of the intense highlight. A light gold champagne makes it versatile on many skin tones, and for all kinds of highlighting needs. TheBalm are an extremely underrated brand, with their products being of such a high standard, for a reasonably affordable price range (as far as high-end Australian makeup goes). If the gold isn’t quite your thang, check out the other Loumanizer shades, tailored for different skin tones.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector Champagne Pop
I’ve previously ranted about my love for this limited edition highlighter, released in 2015, so I’ll be brief here. It is great. Really great. Buy it.

So that concludes my look back at my favourite makeup products of 2015.  Thank you so much for reading. I sincerely hope you enjoyed the series, and maybe found a few products you may want to try for yourself, or if you’re not that into makeup, use this as a gift guide for the special someone in your life who would love a cosmetic treat.

Did you have any favourite products I didn’t list? Or do you agree with me on some of these? Leave a comment below and we can gossip and enable together!

No context or reason needed for this.

Best in beauty 2015: FACE.

Screen Shot 2016-01-13 at 9.03.54 pm

Eyes and lips may be fun, but a spectacular base really holds it all together.

I am a lucky little sucker with naturally very clear and even skin. I guess it makes up for the fact that my bowel is basically useless, almost.

But no matter what your base makeup needs, foundation, concealer and powder form the canvas on which makeup artistry shines.

Keep in mind, my skin is normal to dry, very clear (I’m lucky I rarely have any kind of blemish), and I enjoy a much more minimal coverage to a full coverage.

12583910_825885134204510_892599960_n

FOUNDATION:

Nars Sheer Glow
Shades: Deauville/Mont Blanc.
Although neither sheer nor glowy, this demi matte finish foundation is my long time love and favourite. The smallest amount goes a very long way, and it provides the loveliest, soft finish to my skin. When my skin is on the drier side, it has a tendency to be suck up Sheer Glow, so to rectify that problem, I’ll often apply over the top of a thin layer of Stila Stay All Day.

Mac Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation
Shade: NC20.
My current favourite foundation, Mac PLNWF was new in 2015, and was my solution to makeup just not lasting through very long, and sometimes very hot, days. I’d always thought Mac foundations were too much for my skin, but true to its name, this foundation is nourishing whilst still retaining its long wear. Considering I don’t enjoy full coverage, I use the tiniest amount, patting in a thin layer with my fingers, and it last all damn day, remaining flawless without looking like a mask.

Mac Studio Fix SPF 35 Concealer
Shade: NW20.
After finding nothing but disappointment at the bottom of my concealer tubes, I wanted something long wearing, that I could simply dab on for spot concealing of my very occasionally blemishes, whilst also counteracting my tired, dark circles. This ticks all my boxes, and the little pot lasts and lasts.

Mecca Cosmetica Facial Sunscreen SPF 30 (also available in SPF50, but couldn’t find bottle for photo)
SPF is important, ladies and gents. All day, erryday. As a fair skinned person, I’ve tried a few, but none sit under makeup and sink into skin quite as well as this one. Try the small tube before investing in a large one, if you’d like to see for yourself.

Mecca Cosmetica Lit From Within Primer
I’m yet to find my perfect primer, but this was my most consistently used primer in 2015. Provides a subtle, illuminated healthy glow without looking shiny or oily, and does create a smooth surface for foundation to go on top of.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation
Shade: 1 Bare
Mecca Maxima’s solution to my foundation not lasting long enough for my liking. Although I do love this foundation on its own, I like it best when combined with Nars Sheer Glow, as described above. Also comes with a little concealer on the lid, but I lost that long ago.

12576313_825885120871178_2008111068_n

I used to HATE powder with a passion, but these two products have completely changed my mind, and I’ve fallen head over heels in love.

Nars Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder
Light and glowy, this powder sets and prolongs the wear of makeup without changing the colour or looking powdery. The light reflecting particles leave a diffused look on the skin, blurring pores and fine lines.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder
Shade: Ethereal light
The powders have hype following them in a huge way. If you’ve not heard of them, they come in a variety of shades and finishes, all imitating different forms of light. I’ve tried a few of the colours, and without doubt Ethereal is my favourite. It slightly warms up my face and makes me just look more alive and bright, without adding any sparkle. Although probably not best for a darker skin tone, it adds an ethereal, airbrushed affect to pale skin.

Loved this? Want more? Well you’re in luck, cause there’ll be part four!

Damn, guys. I’m a poet and I didn’t even realise.

Go back and read previous instalments, the first about eyes here and the second about lips here.

His ankles are surely broken.

Best in beauty 2015: LIPS.

Screen Shot 2016-01-13 at 9.03.54 pm

Lips! If a year ago you’d told me in one year I’d have an excessive (and expensive) collection of lip products, I would have been shocked that you had squandered your ability to time travel on finding out useless facts like what I put on my lips.

I also would’ve been shocked that I’d developed the confidence to wear such vibrant lip colours out of the house.

Rocking a bright lip takes guts, and it’s something I’ve had to work up to. But discovering formulas, undertones and colours that work for me has been outrageously fun, and its something I highly recommend everyone try.

Here’s hoping you can benefit from my excessive study.

12583807_825885144204509_1506523451_n

Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick:
Released in 2015, this new formula for Urban Decay comes with a slightly small shade range, but one of the highest standards in quality that I’ve come across. Long wearing and damn near transfer proof, despite the matte finish they are hydrating rather than drying.
Favourite shades:
Tilt, bright orange;
After Dark, deep berry pink with a purpleish blue toned shimmer;
Stark Naked, peach toned nude;
Blackmail, almost black purple.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks:
2015 was the year of the liquid lipstick, and I finally got the chance to try this formula after Sephora finally opened in Melbourne Central, and they’re honestly the only reason I braved the lines and crowds.
Favourite shades:
Mother, dusty mauve pink;
Bauhau5, deep raspberry;
Aeysha, rich lavender.

Nars Audacious Lipsticks:
Hands down my favourite lipstick formula. Perfectly opaque in one swipe, as they advertise. Only wish they didn’t transfer quite so easily.
Favourite shades:
Anna, mauve toned rose.
Natalie, a flamingo, coral pink.
Dominique, a pink lilac, and perhaps one of the most unique colours I’ve ever come across.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils:
A long-wearing, intensely pigmented lip product. These are so good, basically every colour I try knocks my socks off. Only criticism is they can be a tad drying.
Favourite shades:
Sex Machine, mauve toned pink,
Walkyrie, burnt, brown toned red
Dragon Girl, bright pinkish red,
Never Say Never, berry toned pink.
Damned, deep magenta red.

Nars Lip Liner El Agua:
I’m not really one for lip liners, but picked up the purple toned pink El Agua in an attempt to make my excessive collection of mauve-pink toned lipsticks more purple. Long lasting on the lips, elicits compliments.

Stila All Day Liquid Lipsticks:
After acquiring the two holiday sets from Mecca Maxima, I developed an intense love for this formula. Extremely long lasting and easy to apply, in a variety of bright, unique shades.
Favourite shades:
Patina, mauve pink;
Baci, grey toned mauve;
Cosmo, bright violet;
Aria, deep berry;
Cianti, blackened plum.

L’Staj Liquid Lipsticks:
A wild card entry! These lipsticks are available online only, via the L’Staj website. A niche brand catering only for lips, their small shade collection is of an outstanding quality for the price, and is available in packs to further save dollars. I often receive compliments for these colours.
Favourite shades:
Lady Cheeky, pastel lavendar.
Lady Lovely, classic, soft pink.

Mac Evening Rendevous Lipstick:
This limited edition reddish toned purple landed in 2015, and instantly became a favourite shade. I’d be sad that it’s limited edition if it weren’t slightly less awesome than Men Love Mystery, one of my favourite lipsticks of all time.

Colourpop:
I would own many more Colourpop lip products if the shipping cost weren’t so expensive. I’m saving up for a mega-shop sometime in the future. I have the Lippie Stix in Lumiere, a collaboration with YouTube star KathleenLights, and three Lippie Pencils, in Lumiere, Grind and Leather, all of which I would recommend if you’re looking to experiment with colour without laying out for more expensive liners.

It’s been a long and treacherous wait, I’m aware, but the space between now and the hotly anticipate part three will be here faster than you can say “This mauve toned lipstick is definitely different than all those other mauve toned lipsticks I already own. I need it now.”

If you missed part one, which was all about the best eye products of the year, go back and read it here.

Best in beauty 2015: EYES.

Screen Shot 2016-01-13 at 9.03.54 pm

Oh hey there make up lovers, future employers, and friends I’m forcing to read this. Happy 2016, and welcome to a new year of blog posts, now with bonus product focus. Hurray, consumerism!

As I welcome in an exciting new era, I thought it may be fun to look back at the beauty products that made 2015 such an exciting year for me makeup wise, and for my self-expression and growth.

No, seriously, it actually was.

Makeup has the power to inspire and empower, and so although I feel a bit vapid writing about it, I genuinely love it.

I love it so much, in fact, that I spend a lot of money on this hobby. As such, there are a lot of products to talk about, and the Best in Beauty 2015 series will be split into a few different parts.

So, without further ado, welcome to part one.

EYES.

12528047_825885137537843_710544557_n

Oh eyes, you windows to the soul, you.

Eye makeup, I believe, will always be my favourite kind of makeup.

And for me, 2015 was the year I mastered eyeshadow blending.

These are the eyeshadow palettes, three of which were released in 2015 that stood out most in 2015.

Gwen Stefani x Urban Decay Eyeshadow Palette:
If the words “Gwen” and “Stefani” next to each other weren’t enough to sell this to you, then the borderline perfect colour selection and quality should do it. Released on December 26th in Australia, this late addition to 2015’s eyeshadow offerings has firmly cemented itself as one of my favourite. Although at first glance it seems like a lot of the colours are very similar, at least on my fair skin it has an incredible range of versatility, and for once, the palette I can take with me and have all I need.

Urban Decay Naked Basics 2:
A simple little iPhone 5 sized palette of cool toned matte shades. Perfect for the crease and blending, they are a perfect match for a red lip. If you’re feeling like getting all kinds of use out of this palette, the shade Frisk works pretty excellently as a cheek contour shade on fair skin.

Urban Decay Spectrum Palette:
After experimenting with more neutral tones, I wanted to challenge myself to use colour more on my eyes. The Spectrum palette was the perfect way to do this. The limited edition palette comes in a luxe, velvet lined box, and the colour selection is divine. With everything from a duochrome navy/green, to hot pink, and a rose gold, its perfect to pair with a Basics palette and challenge.

Urban Decay Smoky Palette:
Notice a theme here? Yes you sure do. Urban Decay’s Australian arrival in Mecca Maxima back in March 2015 can in itself be considered a solid favourite. The smoky palette added a mega versatile selection of cool shades to my stash, and the pale shades are some of my most use shadows in my entire collection.

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette:
Must be included in any list of favourite eyeshadow palettes, simply as it was the first higher end palette I ever bought, and remains one of my most versatile and most used items. Another palette I can take with me and have every shade I could need. Yes, it does smell (and taste, don’t pretend you haven’t tried) like chocolate, but that gimmick isn’t what gets it across the line as a solid performer.

Colourpop Supershock Eyeshadows:
These shadows are a firm favourite on the eyes front for 2015, despite the ridiculous shipping cost required to get these suckers across the ocean from the USA to my hot little Australian hands. The unique, creamy to powder texture glides on in a vibrant, ultra pigmented pop of colour. Each shade comes packaged individually in a little pot, and at only $5USD a piece, are an absolute steal. I’m a particular fan of Lala and Bae.

BROWS:
Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade:

Oh, dipbrow. How did I cope without you? As a lady that has been filling in her brows since she was 14 – it was in fact the first form of makeup I ever ventured into – I’ve tried everything from powder to pencil, to wax or gel, and consider myself a bit of a pioneer of the natural brow. Dipbrow is undoubtedly my favourite brow product I’ve ever discovered, and don’t see myself straying from it any time soon.

LINER:
Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil Eyeliner:
Although some of these are hit and miss, and I’m not the biggest fan of the need to sharpen, the colour range, lasting power, and pigmentation of these eyeliner pencils has firmly cemented them as my favourite eyeliners of the year. I especially liked the pictured holiday set, with the limited edition rose gold shade Trick, as in the shade Trick from Urban Decay Naked 3.  Here’s hoping it’s added to the permanent line in 2016.

Maybelline Hypersharp Liquid Liner:
Included simply because I’ve strayed from liquid liner over the course of 2015, and didn’t wish to splash out on the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner for it to just sit there unused and dry up. This liner has exceeded all expectations, lasting me months at a time without going dry, and performing flawlessly throughout the day.

12511896_825885127537844_79902593_n

MASCARA:
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara:
Well I’m not one to judge what gets the product namers over at Too Faced going, so no comment on the name. Each to their own and all that. This is however my all time favourite mascara, the one that each time I use, I regret straying from its hourglass bristles thinking theres something better out there for me.
Pro tip: I don’t use it on my bottom lashes due to its annoying habit to transfer and smudge, however on the top lashes will provide luscious curl, volume and length, akin to lash extensions.

Nars Audacious Mascara:
Makes my lashes look outrageously spiky and voluminous, doesn’t transfer at all, and provides intense, flake free drama. What more could I ask for? Except winning the lottery, or for Liam Hemsworth to hurry up and realise his love and uncontainable desire for me.
Pro tip: Apply carefully as its easier than it should be to stab yourself in the eye.

SHADOW STICKS:
Laura Mercier Caviar Eyeshadow Sticks:
Pretty simple concept, these eyeshadow sticks by Laura Mercier are easy to use: twist up the pencil, draw on, smudge in with a finger if you feel so inclined, or a brush if you’re feeling fancy/excessive, and congratulations, you haz eyeshadow. Special mention to the shades Rose Gold and Amethyst, but unfortunately they don’t quite measure up to…

By Terry Ombre Blackstar Cream Eyeshadow:
Providing a sophisticated sparkle unlike anything else I’ve come across, and extremely unique shades, these shadow sticks are in a league of their own. Misty Rock is by far and away my fave shade, a purple toned bronze, with Frozen Quartz, a soft pink, a close second.

Excited and ready for more? Fear not, for part two is just around the proverbial corner.

Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Shimmering Skin Perfector

12285930_798761330250224_2030361097_n

All aboard the hype-lighter train.

I usually pride myself on being a meticulous planner when it comes to shopping, especially makeup shopping.

But Champagne Pop was an impulse buy, ordered before 9:00am, the first time I saw it for sale online, before I’d even left my bed.

If you watch or read any beauty blogs/vlogs, you will have heard about Champagne Pop, the highlighter offspring of collaboration between YouTube makeup artist sensation Jaclyn Hill, and cosmetics company Becca.

If not, you may wonder what the hell I’m talking about.

Basically everyone who slaps makeup on their face for the viewing pleasure of others has sung this little product’s praises, and despite my dubious mistrust of many beauty gurus’ word, my interest was sufficiently piqued.

12273060_798761646916859_2055106218_n

It broke Sephora sale records for most purchased product on its first day of sale, and garnered nothing but praise from the paying public, furthering my intrigue.

So when I saw it online at Sephora Australia, haunted by the words ‘Limited Edition’, I simply dove in and bought it.

Worst-case scenario, I mused to myself, I’d sell it, perhaps at a massive profit, once they’ve all sold out.

For the love of all that is glowy, I am never selling this glorious pan of shine.

12278292_798761636916860_2128151650_n

Jaclyn Hill has raved about Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfectors on her YouTube channel for quite some time, so this collaboration makes a helluva lot of sense. Retaining the same high quality formula, Jaclyn developed her personal perfect universally flattering highlighter shade, with everyone from her fair skinned sister, to her darker skinned viewers, in mind.

Champagne Pop is described as a “soft white gold, with peachy pink undertones”, and it is just that. Its peachy undertone, rather than straight gold or yellow, is what allows it to look so flattering on so many different skin tones.

I didn’t always ‘get’ highlighters. They’re probably the last makeup product that made its way onto my radar as something I was willing to spend my dollars on. Their purpose is somewhat less obvious to the casual makeup user than say mascara, or concealer.

But oh, they make a difference when used correctly.

Highlighter 101: As their name would suggest, they’re used to highlight parts of the face you wish to draw attention to.

Word of warning, as pretty as Champagne Pop is, it is easy to pile on too much.

The first time I dusted it onto my cheekbones, I didn’t love the effect. It was late, my lighting was poor, and I went overboard, with the powder enhancing my skin’s natural texture. I was doubtful. For a moment I almost regretted my (more expensive than I’d care to admit) purchase.

The second time I used it was a whole other story. Using a fan brush, during the natural light of the morning, I layered on a light dusting of the creamy-powder formula. It looked so pretty that another layer was of course necessary.

It looked nice. Really nice.

From a distance, it looked ridiculously astonishing.

If you’re looking for subtle, this isn’t the highlighter for you.

My cheekbones damn well popped, shining like I had little strobe lights beneath my skin. I unashamedly stood in front of the mirror, moving my head around like some kind of fool, checking out my glow, and Snapchatting the experience.

Aforementioned moving head around like a fool. Don’t judge, this is a safe space.

It lasted around seven and a half hours on my cheeks before I began to notice some slight fading. Though it was definitely still there, just not quite as intense.

I had worried that the gold colour may be a bit much, or too dark for my fair skin, despite Jaclyn’s insistence that any skin tone could rock this perfectly.

But she was right, of course. It definitely looks at home on my pale skin, like my cheekbones have been kissed by the sun.

I can’t help but feel sad as I think of the contouring craze that has carved its way into beauty routines and cheeks across the globe. I’ve not seen a single contouring powder, muddy looking face, or poorly blended bronzer, that has enhanced cheekbones the way Champagne Pop has enhanced mine.

With a light hand, this is the most easily achievable, perfect glowing set of defined cheekbones you’ll find.

Champagne Pop is available from Sephora Australia here.

Right now, at time of publication, you can get other shades of Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfectors, for a cheaper price here.

A+ Jeff Probst being the man here.
