Project Pan | Part One

When it comes to the shiny things I like spending my money on, nowhere receives more of my spare pennies than the cosmetics industry. A beauty-junkie to the max, I’m useless once a new palette catches my eye, and I adore trying new products.

But this hobby means I accumulate more products than one face needs, and though I love and cherish each item, I often gravitate to tried and tested favourites, or new goodies, missing a large chunk of my loved makeup collection.

And I’m not alone. In an online community called Project Pan, members attempt to use up or ‘hit pan’ on their cosmetics, sharing and encouraging progress.

A subreddit r/MakeupAddiction is dedicated to encouraging the practice, and discouraging wasteful spending.

The term hit pan, meaning to use a product to the extent that you see the pan into which the powder is pressed, aims to do away with unnecessary waste of cosmetics themselves, their packaging, but also does away with the ‘need’ to buy so many more products.

It’s about time I joined this community, after having my own internal game of trying to use things up, now I’m here to get accountable.

So here’s my first draft pick of products I’ll be aiming to use up.

It’s a Nars heavy selection, and Charlotte Tilbury pops up a bit too. Clearly I’m a true fan of the brands.

I’ll be aiming to photograph and post my progress monthly in a blog post, subbing in new products as needed when I finish one off.

Nars Laguna – This is one of my favourite bronzers, and I’ve already completely used up two other pans of the cult-hit in my makeup wearing time. This one is so close to finishing that I need to make an effort to use it before it shatters.

Hourglass Ethereal Light Ambient Lighting Powder – The Ambient Lighting Powders are some of my absolute favourites, and this again is my second pan of this powder after completing one before.

Nars Orgasm Multiple – I received this deluxe sized sample in a Mecca Beauty Loop Box. The cream formula of the fan-favourite blush can be used on the cheeks or lips, but I love the effect of it on my cheeks. It’s been sitting in my drawer forever, and cream products have limited lifespans, so I’m pushing to use it up.

Nars Copacabana Liquid Illuminator – I love this illuminator, but again, I’ve had it in my collection for a bit over a year, and I’m conscious of cosmetic expiry dates. With so little left, I’m pushing for a finish. I enjoy mixing this into my foundation, and dotting it on my cheekbones and cupids bow under a powder highlight.

By Terry Ombre Blackstars – This is a lesson in using your makeup. I adore these cream eyeshadow sticks, and as such used them sparingly for fear of finishing them up. Now, however, the formula has started to change, and my using Misty Rock all over my eyelid, it dries down strange and creases and flakes off. I plan to attempt to use these up as best I can, but I’m aware I may have to cave and throw a shade or four away.

Nars Larger than Life Eyeliner – I received this little deluxe sample of a black pencil liner in my Mecca Beauty Loop Box. I wear eyeliner every day, and considering I already have a few backup black eyeliners I want to finish this one. However it seems to reproduce overnight, as this thing won’t die. Makes for a compelling repurchase case, however.

Charlotte Tilbury Feline Flick Eyeliner – This liquid eyeliner is on it’s very last legs, and by far I prefer the Stila counterpart, so I’m just trying to get through this little guy.

Charlotte Tilbury Legendary Lashes Mascara – This mascara is gorgeous, creating an unparalleled, beautiful lash effect. However on me, it smudges like hell, so I’m going to attempt to find a way to use this before it dries up and dies.

Nars Audacious Lipstick in Fanny – I wanted to include a lip product in this project as I have more lipsticks than anyone needs. I think I’ll change this around for each project pan, but this beautiful berry is so perfect for the Winter that Australia is technically about to leave behind, but will continue to feel for months to come.
